Jan Deyl Conservatory and Secondary school for Visually Impaired - VIDEO PRESENTATION

Jan Deyl Conservatory and Secondary School for Visually Impaired follows the activity of the Deyl Institute founded in 1910 by an outstanding scientist MUDr. Jan Deyl. The institute started as a charity institution for the education of blind youth. Since the 1920’s it was music that was constantly more and more accentuated at the institute.

Since its foundation until now, the school has been housed in an old building of the Strakovský palace in Lesser Town in Prague, the Czech Republic.

The future lives of former students, music teachers, musicians and piano tuners show that music is completely accessible for blind and visually impaired people and gives them opportunities to lead a full life and have a decent profession.

The school offers study programs in music, voice and piano tuning. Each student learns to play two instruments (alternatively one instrument combined with voice).Apart from that, all students study the piano playing. The study program contains individual instrumental lessons as well as general educational subjects, music theory and methodology. This composition of the study program makes it much easier for the sight handicapped to find a job. In the piano tuning program there are also special theoretical subjects and workshops that the students take as well as the general educational subjects. Students also study the piano playing.

Students of all programs may also attend special classes, for example Brail notation, working with compensational technique, orientation in space and presentation on stage and so on.
